HP CEO Meg Whitman: Google’s Motorola buyout could lead to a closed-source Android

Former eBay CEO, 2010 California gubernatorial candidate and current president and CEO of Hewlett Packard Meg Whitman took the stage at HPs Global Partner Conference in Las Vegas today. She had some reassuring things to say about webOS and , saying HP is committed and that we should  expect it to take some time (2 to 5 years worth) to fully play out what impact this will have on mobiles growing “ecosystem.” Were right there with you Meg. We want webOS to stay relevant, and we love the open-source aspect. B

New Kindle Fire update rolling out now

Kindle Fire owners have been using firmware 6.2.1 for nearly a month now. Amazon changed that, however, with the new 6.2.2 update. It isnt nearly as significant as last months UI-improving 6.2.1 update, but its rolling out now nonetheless.

This is a minor update for the Kindle Fire. In fact, the only notable change is a button in the Silk browser that lets you browse in full-screen mode.

Notes of interest from Apple’s Q1 2012 conference call

Apple on Tuesday posted a massive holiday quarter with record sales of more than 37 million iPhones, 13.5 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs. Following the news, Apple executives participated in a conference call with analysts and the press, and notes of interest follow.

Participating in Tuesday’s call was Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook, Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer, and Treasurer Barry Whistler.

Highlights

  • Apple ended the quarter with $97.6 billion in cash, an increase of $16 billion from the previous quarter.
  • Oppenheimer said Apple executives are “actively discussing” potential uses for its massive cash hoard, but there are no specifics to share.

This Wall Plate Removes Warts

Wall warts. They come in all shapes and sizes, those black (or white) rectangular boxes plugged into our outlets. And they all have two problems. First, they are ugly. Second, they take up an outlet and often the shape of the transformer is such that they turn a dual outlet into a single.

Well, part of that problem is now solved, and in an aesthetically pleasing way.
