IDC warns of ‘cloud wars’ in 2012

Next year will be the battle ground for cloud companies trying to assert their dominance on the market.

So claims analyst firm IDC in its 2012 prediction report, which says the “third platform” – built around mobile computing, social networking, big data and the cloud – had grown substantially this year, claiming the next 12 months will see it responsible for 80 per cent of IT spending growth up until 2020.

With such large figures, the IDC believes it will now become a “year of mobile and cloud platform wars,” with vendors vying to become leaders of the significant technology spaces.

“The industry’s shift to the 3rd Platform will accelerate in 2012, forcing the industry’s leaders to make bold investments and fateful decisions,” said Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC.

AT&T, Telekom to press ahead with T-Mobile deal

Deutsche Telekom and AT&T vowed Thursday to press ahead with the planned sale of the German company’s T-Mobile USA unit to the U.S. cell phone operator despite concerns raised by American authorities.

Nevertheless, AT&T said it plans to take a pretax accounting charge of $4 billion in the current quarter to reflect the break-up fees that would be due to Deutsche Telekom if regulators block the deal.

The two companies said they had withdrawn applications to the Federal Communications Commission regarding the merger and intended to seek its approval again “as soon as practical.”

They took the step to consider “all options at the FCC and to focus their continuing efforts on obtaining antitrust clearance for the transaction from the Department of Justice,” which filed a lawsuit in August to stop the deal, AT&T said in a statement.

“Both companies are continuing to pursue the sale of T-Mobile USA to AT&T,” Deutsche Telekom stressed.

68 New APIs: AMEX OPEN Forum, OpenMenu and Phone Call Demographics

This week we had 68 new APIs added to our API directory including a microvolunteering platform, a mobile application positioning service, a phone call demographic data service, a service for accessing small business content, a restaurant menu sharing service and a calling, VoIP, and messaging service. In addition we covered a recent transit hackathon in Philadelphia.

3defy API: 3defy is an online tool that allows users to create 3D models from photos and view them in 3D.

The 3defy API allows developers to embed 3D models into other applications and websites.
