Kaspersky identifies multi-purpose rootkit threat to Windows and Mac OS X

Kaspersky Lab has detected multi-purpose rootkits capable of posing a threat to 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems, along with a variant that targets Mac OS X.

Kaspersky warns that the key feature of the 64-bit rootkit is that rather than trying to bypass the PatchGuard kernel protection system, it uses a special digital signature for software developers. The rootkit is distributed via a downloader, which also tries to install other malicious software.

Microsoft posts record Q4 and annual results despite falling Windows sales and share price

Microsoft has posted record fourth-quarter revenues of $17.37bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2011, an 8% increase from the same period of the prior year and ahead of analyst expectations of $17.25bn, despite weak sales of its Windows operating system.

Operating income was $6.17 billion, up 4% on the same period the previous year, net income was up 30% at $5.87bn, and earnings per share for the quarter were $0.69 per share, up 35%.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, Microsoft reported record revenue of $69.94bn, a 12% increase from the year before.
