It follows that the more effort you apply during the job search process, the better the result in achieving your “ideal role”. Have a clear idea of your career path and the direction you wish to head and the roles that will allow you head in that direction. My clients often like to know that candidates have applied some care and consideration into their own career planning and that there is a natural progression in people’s careers. It is sometimes hard to justify why someone just wants to “do something completely different” though it’s worth noting that in a highly competitive market there will be people who will.

Here are a few tips to maximise your opportunity in securing that dream job!

  1. Create a list of ideal employers: start with the top 10-20 employers you would like to work for and research what they do and how they hire. It is worth engaging an experiencedspecialist recruitment consultantto help with an introduction to these companies. There is usually a good proportion of contacts they will have with each company on your list. A specialist recruitment consultant will be able to introduce you directly to managers within these organisations and will also take a direct and proactive approach in representing you.
  2. Engage a specialist agency: there is real value in working with a specialist recruitment agency. They will work with premium clients that will acknowledge your area of expertise and will be able to provide great insight into their clients and coach you through the interview process.
  3. Referrals are often a great way of getting a foot in the door. Research people in your network who might be able to introduce you to the types of companies you want to work for and ask them to send your CV to the relevant manager. In some cases they can pass the relevant contact details onto you and you will be able to make a personal approach.
  4. Focus your search in job boards: keep your search focussed and refined to your specific skill set. If you apply for roles that have a remit beyond your capability it is unlikely you will have a response back. Too often I see candidates apply for every job I advertise whether they be a software developer or in a sales function. This often leads to an interpretation from the hiring manager that you don’t have a clear idea of your capabilities and the application is inappropriate. The mainstream job boards allow you to search specific key works in each advert so it’s worthwhile keeping your search tailored to your capability. In Australia the main job boards are: SEEKMyCareer and there are also niche job boards for specific industries.
  5. Use social media smartly: The jobs section on LinkedIn is a great source for direct companies advertising as well asrecruitment agencies and will supplement any traditional job board advertising. It is also worth checking out the jobs tab on any groups you belong to and engage in a conversation with other group members regarding the type of work you seek. Look up the Twitter hashtags for the city you reside in with combinations that cover your background, for e.g. #Sydney#ITjobs could give you a list of recent job posts. You could also follow the Twitter accounts of recruitment agencies who cater to your profile niche.

We can record your Mac’s screen using quick time player for free. First, launch QuickTime Player from your Applications folder, from the Dock, or from any app launcher. Once launched, all you need to do is head up to the File menu in QuickTime Player, and select New Screen Recording. You’ll get a little recording window.

Click on the red Record Button in this recording window, and you’ll have two options: click anywhere on the screen to record the entire screen, or click and drag across any portion of the screen you’d like to capture. If you choose to record the whole screen, the recording will begin immediately. If you decide to only record a portion of your screen, you’ll have to click the Start Recording button that appears after you define the space to be recorded.

When you’re done, click on the same button you started the recording with, only this time it will be a square. Quicktime will offer to save your .mov file somewhere on your hard drive. Do so, and you’re done!
